KATA

Katas are a series of prearranged Karate maneuvers executed against one or more imaginary opponents. Katas are practiced so a person can become proficient in techniques. Katas can be rehearsed alone, and in ancient times they served as a means of practicing Karate where it was outlawed. In these cases, Katas were often passed off as folk dances to avoid arrest.

TERMS NEEDED FOR HIGH GREEN BELT

1. KARATE: Meaning "Empty Handed", it is an art delivering blows with the hands and feet, and uses many parts of the body for blocking and defensive movements.

2. AIKIDO: Used not to damage, but to subdue your opponent, using their momentum against them by the twisting of joints.

3. ISSHINRYU: Incorporates elements of Shorin-Ryu and Goju-Ryu (hand and feet techniques). Kicks are all below the waist. The short stances, close-range techniques, snap punches, snap kicks, hard blocks and punches are common.

4. JUDO: The art of throwing and pinning an opponent to the floor by the use of grappling, strangling, and joint-locking techniques.

5. SHORIN-RYU: This is the sister style to all Shotokan and is derived from three main branches: 1) Shobayashi-Ryu (Small Forest School), 2)Kobayashi-Ryu (Young Forest School), 3) Matsubayashi-Ryu (Pine Forest School) as well as the less popular Matsumura Orthodox. Shorin-Ryu has more upright stances, kicking techniques are usually low-line and typically relies on hand techniques.

6. SHOTOKAN: A hard style employing 50 percent hands and 50 percent feet. Founded by Master Gichin Funakoshi, Shoto being the pen name of Funakoshi and Kan meaning "house of" or "the way," resulting in Shotokan or the Way of Shoto. Shotokan employs low and strong stances as well as moving forward and backward using whiplike movements of the hips to generate power in blocking, striking, punching and kicking.
